MY CITY MY VOTE

MY CITY MY VOTE
‘Powerful mayor free of interference’
MOST TOI READERS ARE IN FAVOUR OF ENDOWING THE MAYOR WITH MORE POWERS, GIVING LONGER TENURE

MY TIMES, MY VOICE
Should Bangalore mayor have more powers and a longer term?
MORE TEETH AS WELL AS TIME
The mayor has a vision and plan for the city’s growth. So a long term is required to deliver on his promises. More power will create good results for the city, since the mayor will not be a political doll.
I TARUN K JAIN
The mayor should be elected for five years with more powers. Also, the standing committee once elected should continue for five years. I NAZIN
AHMAD
Since the mayor is called the first citizen of the city, he should be given powers for its all-round development. To execute the same, time is required. A tenure
of merely a year is not enough for the kind of development a city like Bangalore needs.
I P A SUKUMARAN
A minimum of five year is needed to translate words, plans and promises into concrete action. With extra power and a longer term, he will be able to establish better coordination between different agencies and government authorities. I SAJJAN RAJ MEHTA
A mayor should be elected directly by the people for a duration of five years. This is long overdue and should be implemented immediately. The elected mayor should have more powers over all civic agencies to ensure proper planning, coordination, and better implementation and achieve good governance, that is badly needed for a fast-growing city.
I B N GOVINDARAJULU
It’s quite desirable to have an adequately empowered mayor with a longer term in office This would help in the effective functioning of the BBMP. I A CHANDRASHEKHAR NAIK
Bangalore is a cosmopolitan city spreading its wings far and wide. It has become unwieldy for any mayor whose term is just one year to complete various projects with the existing powers, that too with politicial interference. Empower the mayor with more powers to execute his vision and to increase his term of office to five years. I B S RAGHAVENDRA RAO
Yes. A longer term will help him understand the city’s problems in a better way. RENUKA
Yes, a mayor should have more powers and a longer term so that he can work efficiently. I PREETI
A longer term is required for the mayor to contribute effectively. But the city can function well even without an elected body, which has been our experience in the past few years. I D R PRAKASH
Yes, it will be the right way forward. Also, the mayor should have powers and be free of political interference. That’s how London, New York and other great cities work. I POBBATHI
The mayor should be given more power which will help improve infrastructure and civic amenities. A long term will help him plan well and complete the work in a timely manner. I SURESH UCHIL
A single-window clearance in the form of an empowered mayor would go a long way in eradicating procedural delays that have been the bane of developmental works.
I MV KRISHNA
Bangalore needs long-term mayor with full powers and free of interference from local netas. He should function like a corporate leader to achieve goals. I VIA SMS
Yes, he should be given more power so that he can achieve targets on time. I AMITA
WORTHY CANDIDATE NEEDED
The idea of investing a mayor with more powers and time can be considered if the person elected has a clear vision to improve the city, is honest, people friendly and has no criminal cases registered against him. Otherwise, there’s no point in giving him more power and time. I M N KESARI
I fully support the concept of a directly elected mayor. All these years, the mayor’s post was only a formality. His role had no practical significance for citizens, nor could he be involved in the functioning of the BBMP. The mayor should be elected by the people. I RAMANUJAM S
The mayor should be elected directly. His term should be at least three years. A non-political person should be given preference. I RAVI K SURI
The mayor of Bangalore requires more power and a longer tenure. Everytime a mayor is elected, before he realizes what his job is, the tenure comes to an end. It should be a people’s representative, not a politician. Somebody like NRN or Ramesh Ramanathan. I KALYAN DEVIKUMAR
LONG TENURE NOT NEEDED
More power with proportionate accountability should be provided. A longer term need not be more than two years since any duration is not necessarily a yardstick for real performance. I MANJUNATH
What Bangalore badly needs today is a blueprint foreseeing at least 20 years of growth. Every mayor should only execute her part of that blueprint. In the absence of such a vision, a mayor’s term (irrespective of the duration) can hardly make any difference. I SUJEET NAYAK
