GenNext students to present future concept of BIAL

As the Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) embarks on planning its next phase of expansion, students from prestigious engineering colleges in the City are being roped in to envision the future airport.


Providing an opportunity to students from the local community to showcase their design talent and skill, BIAL has conceived a proprietary event ‘VisionAir’ inviting Next Gen ideas from architecture students. The students will get an opportunity to be involved in designing the airport expansion plan.

Under the programme being organised upto January 2010 and envisioned as a ‘knowledge sharing event’, designs submitted by the participants will, however may not be included or replicated during the actual planning process of the airport for reasons including technical, feasibility and aesthetics, according to BIAL.

So, why is BIAL doing this? According to a spokesperson of the airport such an event had dual advantages.

“For participating students, VisionAir gives a wonderful opportunity to - be a part of an international project, gain hands-on experience on airport design, possibly see elements of her/ his designs come alive in the future and get rewarded”.

The event that began in November, has received 60 entries from 200 students from leading architecture colleges including BMS College Of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar College Of Engineering, MS Ramaiah Institute Of Technology, RV
College Of Engineering, University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and Acharya Institute.

“Representatives from BIAL who visited the colleges and made presentations to the students, introduced them to the airport, its state of the art infrastructure,” added the spokesperson.

Jury to decide finalists

The students who have already visited the airport, will now present their design concepts on December 15 at BIAL.

Finalists from that round will make their presentations to a jury in January 2010, after which the presentations would be on public display in the airport terminal building.
