Here's good news for those worried about the city rapidly losing its green cover. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to plant one million saplings in the city by 2015, in partnership with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC)
The public-private initiative, named 'Clean City, Green City', is aimed at making the city more environment-friendly, BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena said on Thursday, adding that the project will be implemented in coordination with "stake-holders", who can be an industry, a company, an environmentalist or even a responsible citizen. "Residents can identify a stake-holder in their area, who will ensure that saplings are planted, guarded and properly cared for. Identifying local resources is crucial," Meena said.
A core group comprising designers, builders, environmentalists and NGOs, will be formed to implement the project. Meena will be meeting potential stake holders like CREDAI, Indian Institute of Architects, heads of industries and commerce, NGOs, and public sector undertakings, to discuss the project, senior civic. Syed Mohamed Beary, chairman of IGBC, said the project will be implemented in November.
