Bundh calls didn’t affect Bangalore

A peaceful and lazy Sunday passed by, despite calls for ‘Bangalore bundh’ by various Kannada outfits opposing the unveiling of Tiruvalluvar statue.


The bundh call fizzled out with a heavy bandobust provided by the Bangalore police.

Vehicular movement was not affected due to the bundh calls and there was a sense of security among the Bangaloreans, as a large number of policemen were deployed, and leaders and activists of various organisations were rounded up on the slightest hint of trouble.

Offices were closed and traffic was minimal on account of weekend. “The traffic flow was smooth and there were no jams. The only exception being the areas which were closed for the unveiling of the statue,” said DCP (Traffic) P H Rane.

Autos were available at the beck and call of the people, as reports on the shutting down of the auxiliary public transport turned out to be false. “We had no reports of any trouble and were functioning in full strength. Only those autos under the fold of Kannada activists responded to the bundh call,” said an autorickshaw union member. Sensitive locations including the ruling party headquarters and their other offices were kept under police protection.

Due to well-manned system, traffic on the roads around Kensington Road, part of Dickenson Road remained unaffected. Police personnel were well on time in the wee hours of Sunday to regulate traffic and to direct movement of vehicles on the roads adjoining to the roads along Ulsoor lake, where the Tiruvalluvar statue was unvieled at Neelakantan Circle.
