187 Bangalore lakes getting Rs 900-cr makeover

BANGALORE: Submitting a project report to the Lok Adalat regarding overall development of lakes in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)limits, the commissioner on Thursday said the ‘Namma Bangalore Nisarga’ project involves development of 187 lakes at an estimated cost of Rs 900 crore. Of the 187 lakes, 183 lakes come under the jurisdiction of BBMP in which 25 lakes are already developed and 21 lakes have been taken up for development by the BBMP. BDA had developed 12 lakes, Lake Development Authority has developed two lakes and the remaining 123 lakes are identified for development, according to the project report.
The commissioner submitted that the BBMP had first decided to survey the lakes and after completion of the survey, it will fence the lakes. “Protecting lakes from encroachments and their preservation is the main priority for us. We have decided to take the assistance of the Union and state governments in this regard,” the commissioner submitted.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) told the Lok Adalat that effluent treatment plants have been set up at 557 of the 652 health centres. The Lok Adalat has directed the KSPCB to maintain vigil on the remaining hospitals which have not installed ETPs.
