BANGALORE: Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Gulihatti D Shekar, on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the Rs 500-crore international sports complex at Gunjurpaly (Bangalore East taluk) on Wednesday. “This 28-acre sports complex will be a state-of-the-art facility with a five star sports hostel,” he said in his speech.
The Kanteerava Indoor Stadium did not conform to international standards and hence the new complex was planned, he said. “Another grouse with the Kanteerava sports complex is that it doesn’t have a swimming pool,” Shekar said.
The minister said that the new sports complex would have indoor and outdoor stadia, besides a swimming pool.
The project would be completed in two to three years. It would be built on a public private partnership model.
Express of interest had been invited, Shekar informed.
Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavali, speaking on the occasion, said that there was a dearth of playgrounds in the city.
On a note of caution, he remarked that like other projects, this shouldn’t take too long to complete. Commissioner for Youth Services Meghrik and BBMP Joint Commissioner Heera Nayak also attended the programme.
