Palike to set up Environment Cell

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon set up an Environment Cell to look into solid waste management, cutting down of tress and forest conservation within the Palike limits and establish 198 ''BBMP One'' centres in as many wards.
Palike Commissioner, Bharath Lal Meena said officials from the forest department will be associated with the Cell.
The BBMP, on Thursday, also accepted the proposal of the Agenda for Bengaluru Infrastructure Development (ABIDe) and the directives of the government to establish a ward-level administration and revamp its hierarchy.
According to a release sent by the ABIDe, the Palike in its structure will now include 198 ward centres named, “BBMP One”. These centres will henceforth act as a one-stop service centre for all citizens in the wards concerned.
According to ABIDe, the devolution of the City’s administration to ward-level was agreed upon by the chief minister in his review meeting with the officials on June 17, 2009. The initial plans forseen by the Palike and the Bangalore task force will include the setting up of 8 BBMP centres for the eight zones created under the Palike.
The BBMP will publish a detailed GIS map of the newly constituted wards with street-level detail, based on inputs from the Urban Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office.
Other issues discussed at the meeting that has resulted in specific plans suggested to the BBMP include publishing a quarterly edition of health bulletin reflecting on public health, digitised land records for the city and a pilot project on 'waste segregation at source'.
