If you are a regular commuter to Outer Ring Road, Peenya Industrial Area or Amco junction on Mysore Road, you could soon be riding on hybrid buses to reach your destination
The new buses, which will run both on fossil fuel and battery power, are expected to reduce the high pollution levels seen in these areas
“The localities have high levels of suspended particulate matter in the air and also suffer from more noise pollution than other parts of the city. Hybrid buses could make a big difference to them,” secretary for environment and ecology Kanwar Pal told this newspaper, explaining that the intention is to reduce carbon emission in areas of the city where the pollution levels have gone up drastically over the last few years. “The hybrid buses will not only mitigate carbon emission, but also cut down noise pollution
The ministry is expected to take the project seriously considering the rising levels of pollution in the city,” he said. According to transport commissioner Bhaskar Rao, ultimately all the buses in the city will operate on clean fuel, to cut down on pollution
“We hope to introduce CNG buses by 2012. A number of experiments are being carried out by the KSRTC and BMTC to reduce carbon emissions and run their buses on nonfossil fuels,” Mr Rao explains
Chairman of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) H.C
Sharatchandra points out that specific zones designated as residential, commercial and so on, already exist in the city
“The norms and conditions to minimise pollution levels in each of these areas have been laid down, but urban governing bodies are simply not doing their work effectively,” Mr Sharatchandra regrets.
