BANGALORE: Monday was a day of anxiety for Bangalore Metro Rail Transport Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials. The BMRCL has been waiting for the report on investigation into the metro rail accident in Delhi, especially because the Bangalore Metro is being constructed following the Delhi design and using the same technology. Even as the official reports are awaited, the BMRCL has planned precautionary measures to be taken based on the likely reasons of Delhi accident. Managing Director, BMRCL, N Sivasailam said that the Delhi accident seemed to be caused due to extra load on the launching girder. “It looks like there was more load on the girder than it was designed to withstand and that is why it gave way,” he said.
The anxiety is high also because the Bangalore metro structure is being designed to withstand 15 tonnes of load as against the capacity of 17 tonnes of Delhi metro.
The BMRCL is also going to relook at the design and work in the entire curved section immediately as the Delhi accident took place in a curved section of the rail line.
“We will also be extra careful in checking the load that the structure is put through during construction.
The loads must be within the design parameters. The BMRCL is also going to check all the pier caps on which each girder segments are laid,” Sivasailam said.
Apart from these precautions, the BMRCL will continue to have regular checks of the construction material.
The BMRCL conducts periodical checks and maintains all the safety test reports as these reports would be required to be submitted for receiving the final approval to run a train on the track constructed.
