BANGALORE: The Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has 198 wards. The names of the wards are associated with the history of the areas - especially the ones renamed in the final notification, issued recently. The BBMP ward number-1 Yelahanka has now been renamed after Kempegowda, founder of Bangalore city. Yelahanka, a part of the erstwhile Vijaynagara empire was the birth place of King Kempegowda I. “Yelahanka named after the founder of the city is a brilliant idea. It helps us understand the historical relevance of the place,” said Kirti Chandra, senior citizen and resident of Yelahanka.
The Malleswaram ward is now Kaadu Malleshwara ward. The area was earlier a vilage called Mallapura, north-west of Bangalore. It derives its name from the famous Kaadu Malleshwara temple, located in the area. Malleswaram dates back to the Maratha times (Shivaji’s brother Ekoji is said to have built the Kadu Malleswaram temple).
Apart from historical relevance in the renaming process; improtance has been given to prominent citizens of yore, for their dedication and service to the people of the state.
