The state cabinet on Friday cleared the proposal to grant over 90 acres of land at Chikkajala on the outskirts of the city for the Bangalore Turf Club to develop a modern race course.
According the sources, the move will bring the curtains down on the present race course in the heart of the city. The state government has already set a December 31 deadline for the Turf Club to move from its present location.
Race horse owners, who felt the decision was in the right direction. "We now plan to request the government to allow us to continue racing activities in the interim period," said Karnataka Race Horse Owners' Association secretary Arvind Raghavan.
It will take at least three years to ready the infrastructure. Measuring around 85 acres, the plot is yet to be assessed by the BTC.
"Legal procedures and ear-marking of boundaries are two of the major hurdles on the way. The ball is still in the government's court. So unless the legal procedures are cleared, we will be cautious about the decision. We were looking for a lease period of at least 30 years to bring in the right interest," he said.
