qDOUBLE TROUBLE: METRO RAIL, UNDERPASS WORK PROGRESS AT SNAIL’S PACE AFFECTING TRAFFIC

People of Bengaluru south are suffering both the inconvenience caused by the Metro rail project and the delay on the work being carried out to build underpasses in their localities, which are supposed to make their lives easier
The Metro Rail project has eaten into a major portion of the Nanda Theatre road and R V Road, leading to traffic congestion during peak hours
The snail’s pace of work on the Metro rail and the protests against the cutting of trees for it, have been delaying the project, much to the irritation of commuters, like Krishnamurthy of JP Nagar, who is clearly fed up with the taffic bottlenecks
The underpasses at Puttenahalli and Kadirenahalli were planned to deal with the traffic problems, but are currently adding to them due to the delay in their completion
The resulting traffic diversions have become a nuisance , says Manohar R, who lives in Banashankari
Bengaluru South with its planned layouts, well laid and wide roads, has several other problems too. People complain it took more than three months to get the sewerage line relaid in Jayanagar
“It was only after repeated complaints that the BWSSB decided to lay a fresh sewerage line here,” says Mr Manohar
The drainage system in Kempegowda Nagar and Ilyasnagar is so bad that houses are flooded even during a short spell of rain. Haphazard parking is more cause for heartburn
The no parking boards seem ineffective as the police takes no action against those making use of these slots, complain others
“A large number of vehicles enter even residential bylanes posing a threat to the lives of children and senior citizens,” they say
And lack of public toilets results in slum dwellers dirtying the roadsides
Stray dogs are a huge menace in Kempegowdanagar, with the BBMP’s animal birth control programme seeming to have failed. Heaps of garbage are found at road corners in several areas, dumped by residents of apartments in the vicinity
Repeated complaints to BBMP authorities to clear the garbage and to prevent dumping on the roadsides have fallen on deaf ears, say those who live in these areas
“Sometimes, BBMP staff themselves set the garbage on fire creating a nuisance,” complain the residents of the region. BBMP SOUTH report: day 2 In the second part of the 8-part series on infrastructure, Deccan Chronicle highlights the woes of residents in Bengaluru south. ‘
