Namma Metro is set to hit yet another important junction, Minsk Square, even as relief is in sight for commuters on MG Road
For some 30 months beginning July, Minsk
Square will be closed to traffic, shutting down access to Raj Bhavan Road from Cubbon Road, Queen’s Road and Ambedkar Veedhi as work begins on the Metro’s underground stretch from Minsk Square to Majestic
via Vidhana Soudha and Central College. But there’s a trickle of good news, too. The green barricade on MG Road is likely to be removed by August, allowing public access to a wider section of the stretch from Trinity Junction to Anil Kumble Circle

As Namma Metro work gathers pace, commuters’ pain will only increase
First, they reduced MG Road to a narrow stretch
Come July, they will shut down the stretch from Minsk Square to General Post Office and onto Ambedkar Veedhi in front of the Vidhana Soudha
Work on the underground stretch of Metro between Minsk Square and Majestic via Vidhana Soudha and Central College is expected to receive approval shortly, after which it will be tendered for and work will
commence by end of July or early August
Soon after the approval is received, arrangements will be made for diversion of traffic from this stretch to ensure smooth flow of work. Metro officials said they had requested the traffic police to prepare the
diversion map. It is likely that vehicles on Cubbon Road moving towards Minsk Square, for instance, will be diverted into Infantry Road and down to Queen’s Road. On Ambedkar Veedhi, civic authorities will open up the roads within the premises of Vidhana
sed Soudha and the High Court and divert traffic moving towards Race Course Road into those roads, sources said
Once the opening is made for the underground station, diaphragm walls will be built and tunnel boring will begin. Traffic will flow normally on most other roads in the vicinity, the sources added
BMRC will take about 30 months to complete the underground stretch, which is estimated to cost over Rs 3,000 crore, including costs for the station, its electrification and air-conditioning
Meanwhile, a detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared for
extending the Metro from the earlier Mysore Road terminal at Deepanjali Nagar upto Kengeri; RV Road to Electronic City; Whitefield to Kathriguppe; and Byappanahalli to Whitefield
There will be room for extending in other areas and directions later
