BANGALORE: While the BMTC has started to work towards preparation of the Phase II of the Traffic and Transit Management Centres (TTMC), the Express thought it was time to check up on the status of the 10 TTMCs that were taken up in Phase I of project, which was launched with much fanfare.
While the pilot project- Jayanagar TTMC is expected to be put to use by the end of the next month, six months behind the original deadline and many revised ones, work on Domlur and Bannerghatta TTMCs has just started.
The BMTC, which didn’t own the land identified for these two projects, could start work on it only in April this year after it got the ownership over the land. Construction at the other seven sites in the Phase I is on.
On the status of Phase I, Chief Engineer- Projects, BMTC, TK Palanethra Naik, told the Express: “Over 90 per cent of works on Jayanagar TTMC is complete while the other seven TTMCs (in Phase I, except Domlur and Bannerghatta) are 30 per cent complete.
Work on Domlur and Bannerghatta TTMCs is going fast as we do not want to extend the deadline despite the delayed start. These TTMCs will be ready with the other seven, keeping with the schedule.” “The Jayanagar TTMC will be thrown open to the public by June-end and the other nine in July 2010,” he added.
Reasons for delay Naik explained the reason for delay in Jayanagar project as ‘space constraint as it is a busy location’. The under-construction TTMC has roads on its two sides and a building on the third side. “There was hardly any space for stocking material and we used a portion of the already narrow footpath for the purpose. Heavy traffic till late in the evening makes its almost impossible to carry on the work and heavy trucks used for transporting construction material are not allowed in the area till late in the night.
