Infrastructure in the city will come under pressure

Infrastructure in the city will come under pressure

Srikanth Hunasavadi. Bangalore

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to extend its jurisdiction to include the Bangalore International Airport (BIA) at Devanahalli to earn additional revenue. Beyond Hebbal, the roads leading to the airport will be maintained by the National Highways Authority of India.
The Hunasamarana Halli Grama Panchayat, under which the airport falls at present, is also unable to benefit from the airport as the property tax that is charged for the airport is very low. In its proposal to the state government, BBMP has suggested that 500 meters of land on either side of the Bellary Road from Bytarayanapura upto the airport be included within the limits of the Palike.
The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike became the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike in 2006, when city limits expanded from 225 sq km to 740 sq km. Once the proposal to include the airport too within city limits is passed, additional pressure will be exerted on an already-strained city infrastructure.
