ABIDe moots direct election to Mayor's post

ABIDe moots direct election to Mayor's post
DH News Service, Bangalore:
If the Agenda for Bangalore Infrastructure Development (ABIDe) has its way, there will be a direct election for the Mayor while Commissioner shall be appointed by the government only after consultation with the Mayor.

In a draft statutory paper to be presented for public consultations in five locations across the City, ABIDe has recommended the State government to hold direct elections for the post of Mayor. The Mayor, however, will not be eligible to stand for election as councillor or convener of any Neighbourhood Area Committee (NAC) but will have all the rights and privileges of an elected councillor of the council, recommended ABIDe.

In order to avoid any conflict between the Mayor and Commissioner, the ABIDe has recommended that the Commissioner should be appointed after consultation with the Mayor. Commissioner’s tenure in the Corporation will be for a period of two years. It has also recommended that the Commissioner can be removed from the office whenever the corporation resolves by a majority of not less than two-third of its members.
