Freedom Park captures public imagination

Freedom Park captures public imagination
DH News Service, Bangalore:

Sheer curiosity to peep into an imposing, colourful structure, the desire to view the interiors of a former jail, spacious area to take a good walk with friends - varied are the reasons spelt out by people of all ages flocking to the newly inaugurated Freedom Park on Seshadri Road.

Though the Freedom Park has a long way to go before it nears completion, it has already proved to be a hit with the public. Nearly 3,000 people had visited this spacious venue last Sunday, just a day after the inauguration.
Senior citizen, R S Naidu, was noticed enjoying his walk here. This resident of Gandhinagar used to drive up to Cubbon Park for his morning walk daily. “I feel safe here due to the presence of security personnel around. This has prompted me to come here for evening walks for the last three days. ”

Pathway

Naidu’s grouse is that the pathway for walkers must be made smooth. “The fact that the park is just within walking distance from my house is such a huge bonus,” he added.

Another happy section was the large bunch from the hostel of the Maharani College of Arts, located in the vicinity. “We came to find out how the interiors of a jail look like,” said Anu, a final year B.A student. Hostel warden Kumari, who was accompanying two students had this appeal to the BBMP, “Students can come here and study as well as relax. It must be made free for college students who can show their identity card.”

The Cell Yard, which has a clay image of a convict deep in thought and Barracks ‘E’ and ‘F’ were the spots frequented by many. The framed pictures of top politicians and their nostalgic thoughts about their stint in jail too were read with great interest. The imposing building was also gazed at with interest by those on vehicles along the traffic-packed Seshadri Road.

The park is open from 5 to 8.30 in morning and evening. Entry is free for the present, but will be charged shortly.
