Bangalore: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu on Monday laid the foundation stone to mark the commencement of the long-pending widening of the underpass on National Highway 4 below the Bangalore-Salem railway line at Benniganahalli near Krishnarajapuram here.

South Western Railway, in association with the National Highways Authority of India, has taken up the work at a cost of Rs. 7.5 crore.

The narrow road below the railway bridge has become a bottleneck, particularly during peak hour, as this stretch links Whitefield, Bangalore’s major information technology hub, besides connecting the city with Kolar, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Velu instructed officials to ensure that the work was completed within 18 months.
