BBMP ‘raises’ stink in their house

BBMP ‘raises’ stink in their house
Shoddy work by Palike staff on a drainage has made a family’s life miserable

The work on storm water drain on Residency Road ended about three months ago but not the woes of the Vieyra family, one of the worst-hit on the road.
Enter the house of the Vieyras and you would feel they have not cleaned their toilets for days. “Many of our visitors ask us if our drainage has got blocked or we have not cleaned our toilets,” said Rosalin Vieyra.
The stink emanates from the drainage that has not been covered properly by the BBMP employees. The smell is unbearable.
GIRL FALLS ILL
“My daughter has fallen ill because of it and so have I. The stench is intolerable,” she said. The garbage has made matters worse. The BBMP staff have covered the drainage with a mesh and the sweepers dump garbage into it.
CRACKED WALL
Their compound wall, which was demolished for the works, has been rebuilt but cracks have appeared already. “This is shoddy work since it has not survived even for three months,” said Alistair Vieyra, adding that the wall was thicker earlier.
NO FOOTPATH
The footpath in front of their house — which was removed for the works, has not been restored. While autowallahs park their vehicles right in front of their house, a watermelon vendor has made it his ‘business hub’. “People eat watermelon and throw the skin near our compound wall,” said Rosalin.
NO STREET LIGHTS
The street lights too are not working from the time the BBMP took up work in the area. “Accidents are waiting to happen here. The uncovered iron rods on the road increase the risk of accidents on this stretch during nights,” says Alistair.
Repeated calls to the BBMP has not helped. “BBMP commissioner promised to inspect the spot but has yet to do so,” he said.
