He blames the police department increased jurisdiction, attitude of Bangaloreans, delayed justice in court and media hype

Police commissioner S M Bidari is crowing about crime in the city dropping by 40 per cent but that's only the figure for the first 48 days of this year.

Figures for the last two years have a different story to tell: 244 murders in 2007 and 255 last year. The city witnessed 29 murders till February 17 this year, a decline of 40 per cent.

Reasons aplenty

Bidari also blamed society's attitude towards criminals, the judicial system, glorification of crime in the media, the decline of the joint family system and the public's carelessness and lack of cooperation with the police.

Replying to question about the spate of murders in the city, Bidari said the police could not have stopped some of the murders.

What Bidari wants us to do
>>Verify the antecedents of domestic help with the police before hiring them.
>>Keep in touch with neighbours, friends and relatives regularly.
>>Inform the jurisdictional police station when you are out of station.
>>Police have been asked to identify elderly people living in the area keep a tab on them.
>>Increase patrolling and strengthen crime investigation and intelligence wings at the local levels.
