Trees remembered

Trees remembered

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The trees of Bangalore that were felled were remembered on Saturday as the Karnataka Chapter of Transparency International India organised a memorial service for them. A minute’s silence was observed to mark this indiscriminate cutting, next to the stump of a martyred tree, outside the Aquarium in Cubbon Park.

But the memorial service was not without a degree of hope. M.F. Saldhana, former High Court judge, and Meera Saxena, Principal Secretary, Department of Forests and Ecology, planted a sapling near the tree stump. According to B.V. Shetty, general secretary of the Karnataka Chapter, Bangalore had lost over 2,000 trees in the last six months, which has resulted in the increase in day temperature.
Letter

Transparency International India, Karnataka Chapter, along with Mr. Saldhana has also drafted a letter addressed to Chief Minister B.S. Yedyurappa highlighting the dire state of greenery in the city.

Other issues brought up in the letter are those of the Metro Rail and Bangalore International Airport Limited.
