Multi-level solution to parking woes

Multi-level solution to parking woes

As parking woes make city motorists fret and fume, civic agencies can address this problem by using the empty space above the roads to create multi-level car parking facility.
It involves no land acquisition and no disruption of traffic during construction.
Former general manager of Industrial Development Bank of India H Rajasimha said the method involves the creation of a basement to any existing road using non-invasive technology. The basement would be created without holding up traffic even for a day.
"We make a work face by excavating the side walks. Girders are driven across the width of the road and, between the girders, we drive steel plates and cross beams. We excavate the soil below the plates and at design intervals, columns are placed to support the plates and girder system. All along the process, the road above is open for traffic," he said.
The basement works as level 1 and from either sides of the road, RCC columns could be raised which would support a framework of multilevel car parking lot.
Operations
The vehicles drive into the basement from there a lift would pick them up and another automatic system would take the car to an empty parking bay. The motorists may use a passenger lift to reach the ground level. The retrieval time would be another two minutes, Rajasimh said.
