Govt promises safety of citizens

Govt promises safety of citizens
DH News Service,Bangalore:
Even as Bangaloreans are gripped with the fear following series of murders in the city recently, Home Minister Acharya on Thursday defended the Government in the Legislative Council saying most of these cases were related to family feuds and the police can do little about it.

“If a crime happens due to a dispute within a family, what can the Government do about it? Don’t give an impression that these incidents are happening only after this Government came to power,” he stated.
He was replying to Opposition parties’ charges that law and order situation has collapsed in the State capital and the Government has failed to provide security.
Acharya further gave statistics on the number of incidents of murders that happened in the past, to prove a point that 22 murders that happened in the City between January 1, 2009 and February 17, 2009 was not the highest.
“During the same period in the last year, the city witnessed 37 murders. Then the State had President’s rule. But I do not want to blame anybody. Most of these cases are like accidents that cannot be prevented,” he stated. He also added that tough steps are being taken to ensure safety to residents of Bangalore.
Earlier, in a written reply, he said the police have taken measures to nab the accused in the cases and 50 people had been arrested so far. Going by the records, rate of crime has come down considerably in the last eight years, he added.
During 2008, the minister said, as many as 255 murders, 90 cases of robbery and 700 cases of extortion were reported in the City. Of them, 203 cases of murder, 72 robbery and 317 extortion cases have been detected, he stated.
