Even as there are not many takers for the first pedestrian subway on Nrupathunga Road, a second one was laid in 24 hours on Sunday.
The new subway will help pedestrians cross the Nrupathunga Road without any hassles. The second of the three pedestrian subways laid in front of St Martha's Hospital will be thrown open to public in 15 days.
"We needed a subway on this road as traffic is heavy and there is no pedestrian crossing. The subway would help people reach the hospital without waiting for long," said Ravi Kumar, a businessman.
"Costing Rs60 lakh, the subway was laid using pre-cast segment (magic box). On Sunday, traffic was diverted on Central College from Mysore Bank Circle to KG Road. The work on the subway started at 11.30pm on Saturday and was completed by 9pm on Sunday. Now traffic is allowed through this road. The subway will be ready for public use in 15 days," said Ramakanth Desai, assistant executive engineer of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
He said the 14-m long pedestrian subway is 3m wide and 3m high. There would be stairs on either sides.
The subway will have a capacity of 20 persons at a time.
The first subway, located near the Public Works Department (PWD) office, was constructed at a cost of Rs45 lakh. The road was widened at that point to provide a bus bay for the convenience of the commuters.
A third pedestrian subway will come up on the same road shortly.
