Metro making Blore less greener: Justice Saldanha

Metro making Blore less greener: Justice Saldanha
DH News Service,Bangalore:
More than 9,500 trees have been felled for the Bangalore Metro Rail, and thousands more will be cut degrading the Green City further, former High Court judge Justice M F Saldanha said here.

But this cannot help in easing traffic woes as thousands of people will still be travelling by their own vehicles adding to the pollution and to subsequent climate change, he observed.
He was speaking at an interaction programme on climate change organised by Bangalore Management Association (BMA), Bangalore University (BU), Rotary Bangalore Jayanagar and All India Management Association.
Justice Saldanha said travelling 35-40 km to reach Bangaluru International Airport has also contributed to environmental degradation. HAL airport had the capacity to handle 350 flights as per his information given by the HAL chairman. Decision makers should consult experts for better options, he added.
Ashok Maheshwari, president, Rotary Bangalore, Jayanagar, said, “We have planted thousands of saplings in the State and will continue this movement at the same pace.” He suggested a compulsory course on environment in primary schools.

METRO RAIL WILL DEFINITELY SUPPLEMENT THE TRAFFICE OF THE CITY. LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WILL DIGFINITELY USE METRO AND TO THAT EXTENT THERE WILL B LESSR LOAD ON THE ROADS. I M SURE JUSTICE SALDHANA WOULD APPRECATE THAT THE CITY HAS TO SACRIFICE SOMETHING IF IT HAS TO GROW. BENGALURU CANNOT REMAIN SAME OLD CITY AS IT WAS IN 1956. THERE SHOULD B PEOPLES MOVEMENT TO PLANT MORE AND MORE TREES TO BALANCE THE ECOLOGY. LETS NOT STOP PROGRESS. LETS US GROW AS A MODEL CITY OF THE WORLD
