DH News Service,Bangalore:
In view of the contempt case filed against the BBMP Commissioner in connection with shifting of the abattoirs to the outskirts of the City, Minister for Transport R Ashok convened a meeting with the BBMP officials. The BBMP has to submit its reply in the Karnataka High Court on January 13.

Ashok, who is also in-charge of Bangalore City, said the Government will shift the slaughter houses away from the City and also from all along the national highways soon. However, talks on setting up a slaughter house at a 23-acre land in Iglur of Anekal taluk has remained inconclusive. Anekal MLA Narayana swamy at the meeting said no decision could be taken as the matter was in the court.
The HC was moved over the issue after the villagers opposed the BBMP’s move.
Besides, the minister also reviewed shifting of the garbage dumpyard on the outskirts of the City.
“We have decided to shift the dumpyard 25 kilometres away from the City. The dumpyard will get a separate zone status. It will have a compound along with greenery surrounding it. Any encroachment on this land will be checked,” the minister told Deccan Herald. The BBMP is also mulling over proper garbage disposal mechanism and to use garbage for generating electricity and for preparing manure. The BBMP has also floated a global tender in this regard. He said the electricity generation project may cost around Rs 50 crore.
