Who will use these skywalks?

Who will use these skywalks?

Even though the skywalks in the city remain underused, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) has proposed a few more with escalators.
Private operators will be investing in the skywalks, running at a height below the proposed metro line, against advertisement licence for 10 years.
But these escalators are likely to serve more as stairways amid frequent power shutdowns. While Palike maintains that it is not spending tax payers' money for the 56 new skywalks proposed, experts say they will be of no use to pedestrians.
Palike chief engineer Krishna Reddy said of the 56 new skywalks proposed, bids for eight are under consideration.
Lakshya Media and Prakash Arts would be setting up skywalks with escalators near Garuda Mall, Forum Mall, Bangalore Central, Pallavi Cinema, Commercial Street – Kamaraj Road junction, Kodihalli Gate, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan and D'Souza Circle on Victoria Road.
The junctions near Garuda Mall, Brigade road and MG road and the one near the Manipal Centre are probably some of the busiest intersections where crossing is a gamble as the traffic rarely halts. The junction near Garuda Mall has no traffic signal.
So to make things easier for pedestrians, Palike has decided to come up with skywalks in all these places besides at Ramaiah College bus stop, Lalbagh Main Gate, and Queen's Road near Congress office.
Experts think these would soon turn into skywalks with stairways. Former PWD secretary Capt Raja Rao said: "We don't have a stable power supply. This means half the time the escalators won't work and people will have to use them as staircases. Thus, most of them will continue to shy away from using them and the problem won't be solved."
