Bangaloreans can now look forward to a cool summer. The state's supply position will be augmented by 230 MW from the Varahi Hydroelectric Power Plant by December end to meet the peak hour load.
"To meet the peak hour shortage, additional power will be supplied only in the morning and evening," said K Jairaj, principal secretary, Department of Energy.
He added that the state is currently receiving 350 MW from the Bellary Power Plant. But by December 23, the plant will supply 500 MW to the state.
The state is facing a power shortage of 20 per cent, due to increasing demand for power during peak hours.
Transmission and distribution losses are reaching up to 30 per cent in the state, Jairaj said.
The state also lacks new high-power generating projects. "No new projects have come up since 2000. Every year the power demand is increasing by 1000-1200 MW and we have only small generating units that can supply 400 to 450 MW," he added.
The government has purchased 1,800 acres of land in Hubli to set up a thermal power plant.
The project is now awaiting an environmental clearance. About 1,320 MW of power is expected to be supplied from this plant.
The state government will also hold talks with the Chhattisgarh government and acquire land to set up a Rs6,000-crore power plant there. "This would also reduce transmission costs and 2000 MW power will be purchased from here," Jairaj said.
At least 4,000 MW of power is expected from Kudgi near Gadag in phases. "By 2012, an additional 5,000 MW will be added to the grid,"
Jairaj added.
