Bengaluru, which offers its commuters travel in comfort on Volvo buses, is now going a step further and giving them an air-conditioned bus stop.

Commuters will be able to wait in air-conditioned comfort at the bus stop on Kasturba Road, which opens on Monday. Built under a public-private-partnership (PPP) module, it is expected to receive a good response from commuters, particularly in summer, when most need to wait in the hot sun at bus stops.

The A/C bus stop is a pilot project and the BBMP will be looking for feedback from the public to decide on its future, according to sources in the civic authority.

The bus stop has been designed free of cost by an outdoor advertising firm Big Street, Reliance and has been built on land provided by BBMP.

The advertising agency will be given rights to display its advertisements or lease the space for others to display theirs, sources said. The firm will pay an advertisement licence fee to the BBMP.

The bus stop with 12 seats and three benches will be able to accommodate around 20 passengers at a time.

Kasturba Road was identified for the bus stop as it is in the heart of the city and sees a large number of commuters.

People will be requested to keep the bus stop clean and be orderly when boarding the buses.

The stop has been fitted with two air condition panels and switch controls. It will be manned round the clock by security personnel, according to a representative of Big Street.

“Reliance has bagged the tender for display and leasing advertisement rights at bus shelters across Bengaluru. Based on the success of this bus stop we may set up more of them in the city,” he added.
