Fogged, BIAL will be in disarray

Flights scheduled to take off between 5 am and 8 am over the next three days, are likely to be delayed or cancelled with a fog alert being declared at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA).
Since the visibility at the airport will be affected, it will be difficult for flights to take off or land in the morning hours. A visibility of 1,500-1600 metres is necessary for flights to operate.
From Sunday night visibility will be reduced to 500 metres and affect flight schedules from Monday morning, IMD, Bangalore director-in-charge A Muthachammi told DNA.
"This is a common phenomenon in winters and is likely to continue for 2-3 days. But in the case of Devanahalli, since the altitude is higher, the surface level temperature will hover around 15 degree Celsius and the temperature at an altitude of 1.5 km will be higher leading to fog formation," he said,
Muthachammi also added that the lack of strong winds, cool temperatures and clear sky is ideal for formation of water vapour which has further amplified the fog formation.
The fog this time will, however, not be as dense as it was last week when visibility was around 200 metres, added the official.
All early morning flights were rescheduled by four hours late last week.
According to a senior BIA Air Traffic Control (ATC) official, the flights would be delayed based on the changing weather conditions.
"During the last fog alert, many flights were diverted to Chennai. A similar situation might repeat if the fog condition intensifies," Muthachammi said. He added that they are receiving weather updates every half an hour.
However, cancellations and rescheduling of flights will vary with individual airlines.blurred: A foggy stretch of Bellary road on Sunday.
