'City needs Chipko movement'

'City needs Chipko movement'
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Eminent environmentalist Sundarlal Bahuguna today suggested Bangaloreans to hug the trees which are on a 'death row' due to the Metro Rail project.

Responding to questions, the grand-old Bahuguna said trees should never be felled for the ‘so-called’ developmental works. The environmental activist who shot to fame through his ‘Chipko’ movement in Himachal Pradesh to save trees by hugging them, said, Bangaloreans should also follow it.

He said, some people, who have concerns for environment and who can donate their time, should come forward against any such move.

He termed the felling of trees as mass murder. “I always believed in ‘Yes to Life and No to Death’. Trees should be protected always because they help maintaining an ecological balance. They inhale carbon di oxide and exhale oxygen. They are the sources of our lives. Without them we are nothing, so our primary job should be to save trees at any cost,” said Bahuguna.

He advocated tree farming on a large scale to save the ecological imbalance in the country. He said population explosion should be checked as it is going to cause too much damage on the ecological balance.
