Parking-meter tender gets poor response

Parking-meter tender gets poor response
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: It’s been close to 15 days since the BBMP floated tenders for the metered pay-and-park system for 37 roads across the city. With just two responses so far, it seems there aren’t too many takers to replicate the Brigade Road model in place since 2004.
This initiative followed the drive by the Brigade Road traders association which currently earns a revenue of Rs 2 lakh a month on a 50:50 revenue-sharing basis with the BBMP. About 1,600 vehicles are parked in the 85 bays on this road. According to BBMP sources, the poor response to the tenders has been a bit of a shock, considering that at least 25 of these areas have associations. The BBMP will write to the government for directions on taking this project forward.
The urban development department had directed BBMP to develop the system on a PPP basis under the build, operate and transfer (BOT) mode across select roads. In spite of the government order not stressing on the usual tendering process, BBMP had gone ahead with tendering. “We had to do this to check if traders were also interested in the system,’’ a BBMP official told TOI.
