The developers of BEML Layout will be slapped with notices for failing to install sewage treatment plants and allowing drainage into Siddapura Lake. Thousands of fish were found dead in the lake on Wednesday and authorities suspect that the fish were killed by sewage pollution. Ecology and environment minister J. Krishna Palemar inspected the spot and directed BBMP officials to prepare a report identifying lapses that led to the pollution of the lake.

The report will be prepared with inputs from the BDA, BWSSB, Lake Development Authority, fisheries department and Kar nataka Sate Pollution Control Board. Based on the report, action will be taken against departments responsible for polluting the lake, a BBMP official said. The dead fish will be burnt to avoid an epidemic outbreak, the official added.

The LDA has sent water samples for laboratory tests to determine what killed the fish. BEML Layout is approved by BDA. BDA and KSPCB should have ensured that sewage treatment plants were installed in the locality.

The fisheries department had given a five-year contract to R. Manjunath, a fisherman, to cultivate katla, a freshwater fish, in the lake. Mr Manjunath told that contamination of the lake water killed the fish.
