Traffic officers are expected to study the situation on Saturday and decide on whether the one-way on Magrath Road can be retained
The traffic police on Friday refused to withdraw the diversions for vehicles at the Residency Road, Brigade Road junction, despite the BBMP’s claim that the work on the storm water drain had been almost completed at the spot.

A senior traffic officer said that the “shoddy work” by the BBMP had created death traps on either side of the road and the department would not risk the lives of commuters until the work was fully completed.

“At present, large vehicles such as buses need to incline to the left when heading towards Mayo Hall and on the right the road has been elevated creating a death trap for two-wheelers. Moreover, the junction is filled with shoppers during weekends who could be threatened by the state of the traffic here,” the officer said. BBMP chief engineer (storm water drains) Chikkarappay said the work on remodelling the storm water drain had been completed and the road was ready for use of vehicles. “Construction of the box drain using pre cast elements was completed on Thursday night. A 10 m road has been provided for vehicles. Related work will be completed in a week’s time,” he said.

Traffic officers are expected to study the situation on Saturday and decide on whether the one-way on Magrath Road can be retained.

“We have held talks with the local MLA and association members on the work by the BBMP and the traffic diversions are expected to continue till Monday,” the officer added.

The traffic police say this is not the first time that the BBMP has done something like this. “If we allow the traffic, there is no guarantee that the work will be completed at all,” the officer added.
