BANGALORE: The state government, on Wednesday, approved the proposed 8.7-kilometre extension of the North-South corridor of Metro rail project.

The extension from Yeshwantpur to Hesaraghatta Cross (Peenya) on the northern side and from RV Road Terminal to Jarganahalli (at Outer Ring Road- Kanakapura Road Junction) in the south, is part of phase I and would be completed by September 2012.The Yeshwantpur to Peenya extension is 5.6 km, while the RV Road- Jarganahalli is 3.1 km.

The implementing agency of the Metro rail project, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, in January, had proposed to the government the extension to cover the existing and upcoming industrial areas on both sides of NH-4 in the north and many densely-populated areas like Jayanagar, JP Nagar and Banashankari in the south and to connect Metro rail line to ORR. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had prepared the detailed report for the extension.

With the 8.7-km extension, the existing 33-km metro network in phase I becomes 41.7 km. To the already approved 32 stations, the extension will add nine more stations. The NS corridor will now have three more stations at Banashankari, JP Nagar and Jarganahalli on the southern end and six more at Peenya, ORR, Peenya village, Jalahalli, T Dasarahalli and Hesaraghatta Cross on the northern end.
