The ambitious B Trac project to ease traffic in the city will get a fillip after the foundation stone for the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) is laid on Monday.

The new TMC coming up on Infantry Road will be the Bengaluru headquarters of the city traffic police. The cost of constructing this eight-storeyed building is Rs 12.8 crore and the equipment will be worth Rs 30 crore. The TMC is likely to be ready to manage traffic within a span of 18 to 20 months. “TMC is an integration of the technology that we plan to use in the coming years. The technology to curb traffic related woes will take a period of two to four years, and will be implemented gradually.

“Today, there are 240 signals in the city and by January 2009 it will be almost 400. In the next three years, the city will have 800 signals in the city all hi- tech. Their timing will fluctuate depending on traffic density. The TMC will have all the related information that will be fed to the signals according to which the timing will fluctuate,” said additional traffic commissioner of police, traffic and security, Praveen Sood.

There are 80 surveillance cameras and the number will increase to 400 in three years. These cameras will beam live pictures into TMC for feedback, Mr Sood added.

“Violations occurring on the field can be seen through the system and recorded for further use as evidence in the court and action initiated through communication to the field officers,” said Mr Sood.

The enforcement cameras located at five junctions across the city would be recording and beaming the violations into the TMC. The enforcement team would have to download the violations and then transfer the information to the automated enforcement system.

Meanwhile, four new traffic police stations will be inaugurated on Monday at Electronic city, Whitefield, Chikkajala, and one near the international airport.
