BANGALORE: Residents of Srinagar on Monday staged a protest against the State Government for increasing bus fares. They also protested against the inaction of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike in attending to the civic problems of the locality.

The protest march was organised by the Sringara Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi in Srinagar on Monday.

Samiti president H. Kempanna said the increase in prices of all essential commodities had adversely affected the common man. He maintained that the increase in bus fares would add to the common man’s burden.

Drawing the attention to the problems faced by the residents, Mr. Kempanna alleged that debris on Srinagar Main Road had not been cleared for a long time.

This was obstructing vehicular movement, especially buses. Most of the roads were in poor condition and motorists were facing problems because of potholes. The BBMP officials had done nothing so far to mitigate the difficulties of the people, he charged.

He said that portions of the retaining walls of the main drain in Srinagar had collapsed owing to heavy flow. It was affecting the foundation of the houses adjacent to the drain.

“Drains are filled with silt and hence water overflows on roads. Water has entered several houses in the low-lying areas. We appeal to the BBMP officials to attend to these problems immediately,” he said.

Noted writer and actor H.G. Somashekar Rao said, “The problems of the locality have multiplied following the recent rain. None of the officials have visited the spot to hear the grievances of the people.”
CPI (M) protest

Members of Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest near Navrang Circle here opposing the increase in bus fares.

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) had acted against its assurance that it would not increase the fares, they alleged.
