Trees won’t be axed for wider roads

Bangalore: Next time the BBMP takes up road-widening work in your neighbourhood, you won’t have to worry about shady trees being cut. The government will shift all roadside trees, power and telephone poles before roads are widened.
“This follows a suggestion from the empowered committee on road widening headed by environmentalist Yellappa Reddy,’’ urban development minister Suresh Kumar said on Monday, after a meeting to discuss traffic and environment issues. He said the government was considering other suggestions from committee such as staggering of film show timings, removal of encroachments from footpaths and discouraging entry to congested roads.
