Take a stroll down Whitefield roads and you will come across villas, pent houses and mansions with elaborate gardens lining them. But drive on the battered roads and you could mistake them for being part of a village rather than a posh neighbourhood.

People living in swanky homes have no drinking water supply and are forced to depend on borewells. “We need better roads, drinking water, and door to door garbage collection. The situation goes out of control in the rainy season. Overflowing drains and lakes have damaged the roads further,” says Mr Shivaraj Patil, who lives on Whitefield Main Road.

The Mahadevapura City Municipal Council (CMC), which covered Whitefield before the formation of the BBMP, claimed it could not do much as there was a fund crunch after it was stopped from collecting betterment charges from the public, he recalled.

Later, after the formation of the BBMP the residents had been forced to pay taxes on par with other more developed areas in its jurisdiction.

“But we have gained nothing. There has been no improvement in the civic amenities here in the last 18 months. All that has happened is a change of board,” he regretted .

Mr Vincent George, a resident of Bore Well Street, said, “We thought that things would fall in place once the BBMP was formed. But driving on these roads continues to be a back breaking experience. Some of the roads have not even been black topped.” BBMP joint commissioner (Mahadevapura zone) B. Heera Nayak said that a drive to fill up potholes had begun and in the next week all the potholes would be filled up.

“Major roads have been identified for asphalting and work will begin after the monsoon,” he assured.

“Some parts do not have adequate garbage collection in Whitefield. All wards will have doorto-door collection from January,” he added.
