Bengaluru is hav ing no respite from rain. Over 15 houses were inundated with storm water at Padmanabhanagar due to the overnight rainfall on Monday. This time, residents of Terrance Garden Apartment, Nandini Apartment and Nandi Enclave and BEML Layout at Basaveshwara Nagar were at the receiving end.
“Our house was completely marooned with four feet of water at the portico and inside the house. Due to the overflowing of a nearby drain, water entered the house and drained into the sump. Blocking of manholes in BEML Layout has led to sewerage entering the house along with the rain. We engaged people to flush out water with buckets throughout the night,” said retired police inspector K.P. Venkateshaiah.

“Why can’t the BBMP act in advance to prevent these problems?” he asked.

However, the BBMP personnel drained out the rainwater on Tuesday morning and cleared blocked manholes. Even a small shower leaves over 400 families in a fix in these areas, with water entering basements and houses. Life for these 400 families becomes hell during rainy season forcing them to look for alternate means of transport despite having personal cars.

“We cannot take out our cars as drain water floods the basement and damages the vehicles,” said Menaka M, a resident.

S. Savithri, a resident of Nandini Apartments, said: “Repeated complaints to BBMP officials have had no effect. We have had no relief in the past three years. We could not send our children to school on Tuesday as our cars were struck at the basement after the rain. We could not step out of the house until the water was flushed out with the help of pumps.”
