Raised pedestrian crossings in city


The Bangalore Traffic Police has identified 384 locations in the city for introducing raised pedestrian crossings. This was done with a view to making it easy for pedestrians, especially children and senior citizens, to cross roads which are virtually impossible to cross during peak traffic hours. It was decided to implement these raised pedestrian crossings at all important bus stops to give pedestrians the right of way to cross the road first and safely.
At present, 55 such raised pedestrian crossings have been taken up and work is in progress. The total cost of these works is approximately Rs 5 crores. To execute works on the remaining 329 raised pedestrian crossings, an additional grant of approximately Rs 5 crores is required, according to BBMP sources. The tendering process is on and the work is expected to be completed in two months.
According to sources in the BBMP's traffic engineering cell, the raised pedestrian crossings will have distinct features so that pedestrians can be spotted at a distance and vehicles will slow down. The ramps of these crossings will be paved or cobbled and will be painted in white or yellow colours to make it easy to distinguish at night. Also, lights will be focussed on these crossings to make visibility easier for both pedestrians and motorists.
