: It has been over 18 months since Greater Bengaluru, aka Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, was created to bring about a paradigm shift in the city’s infrastructure.
But the situation is no better than it was earlier.
The state government vowed to bring all the seven City Municipal Councils (CMCs), a Town Municipal Council (TMC) and 110 villages on par with the core BMP area.
This was specifically done to improve infrastructure and civic amenities, but residents of these areas continue to cope with poor infrastructure. They blame the administration and successive governments for their plight.
BBMP was merged with the TMC, CMCs and 110 villages on January 17, 2007, expanding the metropolis from 226 sq. km to 840 sq. km.
Despite allocating Rs 70 crore to each of its five zones, the BBMP has failed to meet public expectations.
Even a light rainfall leads to floods in the IT hubs of Bommanahalli, Mahadevapura and KR Puram.
This apart, people in these areas have to endure acute water shortage, battered roads and poor electrification.
People have been demanding for motorable roads, stench-free drains and garbage clearance, but the BBMP has failed to address their problems.
The situation is more or less the same in all the new areas that have come under the BBMP umbrella.
The seven CMCs are KR Puram, Mahadevapura, Byatarayanapura, Dasarahalli, Bommanahalli, Yelahanka and Rajarajeshwarinagar. The TMC is Kengeri.
