Traffic signal saves many

Traffic signal saves many
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Many people will have to thank the traffic signal for saving their lives. The impact of a tree fall on the road would have been disastrous had the signal at the junction near R V Dental College in J P Nagar gone green on Thursday morning...

A huge tree came crashing down at the junction when the red light was on with many vehicles queued up on the road. A four-wheeler was completely crushed and a few other vehicles were partially damaged in the incident. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Many motorists expressed that had the tree collapsed when the vehicles were moving, there would have been some casualties. Noticing the signs of the tree coming down, those inside the vehicles jumped out and ran for life.

The motorists vented their anger against the BBMP for not chopping such trees.

Former secretary department of ecology and environment A N Yellappa Reddy told Deccan Herald: “Trees suddenly collapse due to canopy imbalance which occurs due to cutting of roots. BWSSB, PWD, KPTCL and cable operators and underground drainage workers cut the roots while digging the ground.”

“Once the roots are cuts, roots and branches develop fungus. Once the fungus enters stem, roots and branches get rotten. With asphalted roads and cement pavements, there won’t be percolation near the trees. With less water, there will be deficiency of nutrients in the trees, which weakens the trees. Gusty winds and heavy rains lead to their collapse. We have not realised the importance of tree and tree management,” he lamented.
