Bangalore on new path to progress

Bangalore on new path to progress
TEAM TOI

Mega figures for mega projects. Bangalore’s infrastructure got a big boost with the new BJP government allocating a large share of the pie to the capital. It obviously took into consideration newly added areas and kept an eye on the impending civic elections and parliamentary polls.
Bangalore got Rs 1,800 crore for roads, water supply, drainage, traffic and housing sectors. The health sector looks bright with funds for a new hospital and trauma care wards in Victoria and Bowring hospitals. Railways can double the Bangalore-Mysore line and complete it till Ramanagaram this year.
While Crisil estimated that Bangalore needs at Rs 36,000 crore for infrastructure in the next five years, the government has not only increased its funding for Namma Metro to Rs 700 crore, but also given a special allocation of Rs 300 crore to BBMP.
To provide seamless connectivity for south Bangaloreans and residents of Electronic City to BIA, BDA will take up improvements to the 31-km stretch of Outer Ring Road from Hebbal to Silk Board Junction. The project envisages 10 grade separators at signalized-junctions at Rs 350 crore to make the stretch signal-free and a zero tolerance zone. BETTER CITY

• Rs 1,800 cr for Bangalore infrastructure development

• Formation of 60,000 BDA sites in Kempegowda Extension

• 10 flyovers and underpasses along Outer Ring Road

• Rs 3,000 cr for Peripheral Ring Road under PPP

• High-speed Rail for Bangalore International Airport

• Rs 700-crore grant for Metro Rail

• 40 multi-storey car parking facilities under PPP Metro Rail on fast track
With focus on Bangalore’s development, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has allocated Rs 300 crore as special grant for the BBMP, taking into consideration the needs of Greater Bangalore areas.
BBMP commissioner S Subramanya said the allocation will be spent on areas that need immediate attention in all 28 constituencies with emphasis on new areas. The PWD has been sanctioned Rs 240 crore to improve select roads in and around Bangalore which lead to BIA.
As for parking, the government has announced the building of multi-storeyed parking facilities on a publicprivate-partnership basis.
The government has also allocated Rs 100 crore to the BWSSB to take up major borewell regradation project to supply drinking water. The borewells here have either dried up or are defunct.
The BWSSB will energize the borewells and fit them with chlorination units, identify areas to sink new borewells and commission more mini-water supply projects.
The BWSSB is also expecting some funds for water supply and drainage from the cash-rich BDA which will plough back Rs 700 crore to provide roads, drainage, and drinking water facilities in areas newly added to the BBMP.
The BDA’s new layout at Yeshwanthpur and Kengeri hoblis, Nada Prabu Kempegowda Layout, will be formed to provide 60,000 sites of which 20% will be reserved for the economically weaker section. The Rs 2,610 crore project will need 4,814 acres of land.
Metro Rail, already nine months behind schedule, will be accelerated this year and make up for the delay. According to BMRC managing director N Sivasailam, the Rs 700 crore government allocation is as per the agreement. However, government has promised to allocate more if need be.
