Residents give ideas to ease Silk Board chaos

Residents give ideas to ease Silk Board chaos
They Put Forward ‘Looping System’
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: Everybody knows that traffic holds-up at the Silk Board junction during peak hours is due to high volume of vehicles. But does anyone have a solution? Spandana Nagareeka Vedike, an association of residents in the nearby BTM Layout, has proposed an innovative idea.
Ashok Kumar of the Vedike suggested a looping system that connects HSR Layout and BTM Layout to the flyover leading to Electronic City and Madiwala respectively. While traffic signals under the flyover will be there, this looping system will give commuters some relief. The system can work while being connected to the existing flyover — it involves travel of a small additional distance. Land for the loops at the junction on the HSR Layout side and Bommanahalli side can be made available.
Unable to bear the agony of commuting at the junction, residents like Ashok Kumar sought solutions themselves. Discussions with the joint commissioner of police (traffic) on methods to unlock the traffic — a grade separator, underpass, separate lanes, steel flyovers, avoiding heavy vehicles and other innovative suggestions — hit a dead end due to technicalities.
Spandana Nagareeka Vedike worked out a solution with the help of traffic authorities, and staff at the Adugodi and Madiwala police stations. The Silk Board junction will be converted into a parking lot once the 9.5-km flyover connecting Electronic City is opened in 2009. This could cause more chaos at an already chaotic junction, according to residents who are following the project.
