MLA files petition against the lease

The lessee accused of trying to build a road on tank bed

The court has asked the Government and LDA to reply

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the State Government and the Lake Development Authority to take steps to protect and preserve the Mahadevapura Lake in Mahadevapura, Bangalore.

A Division Bench comprising Justice S. R. Bannurmath and Justice A.N. Venugopala Gowda passed the order on a petition by a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Nagaraj.
The agreement

The petitioner said the Lake Development Authority had entered into an agreement with a company for maintaining and restoring the lake.

The company, instead of protecting the water body, was constructing a road on the tank bed.

The petitioner said the road on the tank bed would lead to the “death” of the water body apart from leading to apartments coming up on the periphery of the tank and the tank bed. The petitioner had urged the court to intervene to save the water body.

The Lake Development Authority contended that it was in charge of protecting the lake and all steps had been taken in this regard.
No buildings or roads

The Bench took note of this submission and directed the State Government and the Lake Development Authority to ensure that all steps were taken to preserve and protect the lake and that no buildings or roads came up on the tank bed.

The Bench disposed of the petition with directions to the State and the Lake Development Authority to protect the lake
