‘People must understand traffic rules’

‘People must understand traffic rules’

From enforcing lane discipline to carpooling and taking public transport, readers are full of ideas to ease the seemingly unending traffic woes of Bangalore
Strengthen public transport
Left lane must never be blocked by vehicles. Parking must be provided at major business and commercial places and no one should be allowed to stop a car or park it on the road. It would help if there is good public transport, carpooling or chartered buses. I SAMVEDNA
Use transportation provided by office even if you have your own car. This will save a lot of fuel and decongest traffic. Traffic police should never switch off traffic signals. I NANDAKUMAR
Privatize BMTC or at least allow private buses to flood the city by cutting the monopoly of the most indifferent, incapable and inefficient BMTC running old rickety buses with worn-out fittings, not stopping close to bus-stops, stopping in the middle of the roads, making it difficult for commuters to alight or board buses. Fill potholes and create good roads at least at junctions. I E N GOVINDARAJAN
Increase public vehicles and ensure they are regular. Allow private buses to ply. I ANONYMOUS
Make a separate line for buses. Widen roads to almost double the radius of 30 metres at signals. I ANONYMOUS
City needs local trains and ring roads need to be extended to connect with prominent roads. I MARGARET
Carpool to work
Auto stands should be in places which are not part of bus routes. Residents of an area should carpool. I RANJANA BISWAS
Enforce lane discipline strictly — it’s almost non-existent in Bangalore. There is a crying need for a viable, efficient mass rapid transport system to discourage people from using private vehicles. In these days of rising fuel prices and increasing traffic congestion, it is criminal to see so many private vehicles with a sole occupant taking up so much of precious road space, and guzzling so much petrol and polluting the atmosphere. I USHA G RAO
Number of vehicles can be reduced substantially by imposing reasonable restrictions on registration of new vehicles. Total ban may not be feasible, a limit for the registration of minimum number of vehicles may be fixed. A system of sharing vehicles by staff of government departments and corporate bodies should be organized. There are sizeable number of vehicles belonging to government and private companies. Through proper coordination and planning, the system of sharing vehicles may bring desired results. I A CHANDRASHEKAR NAIK
Staggered timings with different weekly holidays; carpooling and public transport, walking or cycling on alternate days are some steps that could be tried out. I MANJUNATH
Widen roads, construct
flyovers
Narrow roads should be widened wherever possible
and it should be free from hawkers. Ban public function on roads to enable free flow of traffic. I P A SUKUMARAN
Identify congested areas and construct elevated three-lane roads. Allot fewer vehicles to people. I N B VISHWANATH
Most traffic junctions lack proper traffic signals. So, implementing few more traffic meters and more flyovers can bring relief. I TAHSEENA RAZACK We can overcome traffic problems by building more flyovers. Some are in progress but the city requires a lot more. I ANONYMOUS
Erect flyovers and remove encroachments on footpaths. I KOTTAWAR
Strictly enforce rules
Every ward should have at least two or three tow vehicles which monitor the area continuously 24x7. Any illegally parked vehicle should be towed away mercilessly and fined heavily. Every student should spend some time in managing traffic in his area so that he understands better the perils of violating rules. They should be supervised by senior staff of the college and be given the authority to issue challans to offenders. I G PADMANABHAN
Enforce lane discipline in specific areas like Bellary Road. Responsible citizens should be empowered to make complaints about dangerous driving on behalf of the public. I SAMPATH SUNDARAN
Immediately cancel licences of all commercial activities of a building if it does not have parking space. Similarly, restrict registration of vehicles if a person does not have parking facility. Implement oneway system for all city buses and autos. I M N KESARI
A high-level task group must look into the traffic situation and set right the wrongs. Traffic police must be posted at junctions. The task group must have the authority to devise guidelines and monitor their implementation. Accident-prone roads must be reconstructed, heavy fines must be collected from offenders. Mass awareness programmes, stress- and strain-related programmes for traffic wardens must be introduced. I TARUN K JAIN
All processions and protests on the roads should be strictly banned. Animal carts should not be allowed on the main road. I VIMALA KESARI
Strictly prohibit lorry traffic during peak hours. Remove all encroachments on roads and footpaths. I S SUNDARA
Following traffic rules is a must. Teach bus and auto drivers to follow traffic rules.
I JAGADISH KALMATH
Hefty penalty for errant drivers and taking public transport more often. I ROY VARGHESE Cameras should be installed to nab traffic offenders. There should be more one-ways. I THOMAS VERGHESE
A lane system is needed and stringent measures should be taken to punish offenders. I JOSEPHINE
There is a woefully inadequate number of traffic constables to tackle the almost chaotic behaviour of road users. Traffic management can be outsourced to a reputed agency comprising retired group of army men. The fine collected will easily pay for their salaries, etc and yet generate sufficient revenue. If, over a period of time, things improve, they can be reduced to profitable levels. Computerise records to record offenders’ history and to enable on-the-spot fine collection and issue of receipts. I V RAMACHANDRAN
On a 30 ft or 40 ft wide road, not more than two two-wheelers or two six-wheelers or two four-wheelers should be allowed. Anyone coming on the right extreme should be fined Rs 300 or Rs 500, and vehicle seized for a week. At any junction or crossroad, a minimum distance measuring two lightpoles should be made as a noparking zone. I ARUN P SHARMA
The public must understand traffic rules. There should be at least two traffic policemen for each road to control congestion. I ANONYMOUS
Stagger timings
Different office hours are required. The city needs more flyovers. I ANONYMOUS
Reduce the vehicles on the road. If IT companies have satellite offices within walking distances of major localities, this will automatically reduce the number of vehicles. Majority of the jobs in an IT company can be done from home with a good internet connection. It is not mandatory for employees to be physically present at a particular location to complete their work. I LAKSHMINARAYANA
Stagger working hours. This should be done for all offices and especially factories. Weekly holidays should be observed on different days. I V ANAND
