Bangalore tops in quality of life, personal safety

Bangalore: Bangaloreans grumbling about their quality of life should take a look at this: a global survey says the city tops the country in overall quality of living.

According to a global survey conducted by Mercer, a leading global provider of consulting, outsourcing and investment service, Mumbai and New Delhi are ranked after Bangalore city.

While Bangalore has secured the 140th position in global ranking, Mumbai has got the 142nd rank and closely followed by New Delhi (145) and Chennai (153). Bangalore was ranked 153rd in the last year when Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai were ranked 151, 148 and 159, respectively.

Also, Bangalore has secured the top position in the country in the ranking on personal safety. Bangalore shared the 112th rank with Chennai in personal safety globally. New Delhi and Mumbai secured the 121st and the 142nd ranks respectively, said a press release issued by the Mercer.

The release stated that the quality of living was determined by taking into consideration political and social environment, medical and health considerations, economic environment and the availability of consumer goods, public services and transportation, recreation and quality housing, among others.

The ranks in personal safety were allotted based on determinants such as internal stability, crime, effectiveness of law enforcement and relationship with other cities or countries.

The survey noted that the upward movement of quality of living in three Indian cities can be attributed to improvement in four determinants: political and social environment, medical and health considerations, economic environment and availability of consumer goods.
