Pre-monsoon showers to continue till end of May

Bangalore: Stay away from trees and poles, and park your vehicles in a safe place, since showers are expected to continue for the next few days.
Though Cyclone Nargis is moving towards the North-East, away from India, the temperature continues to be 32.70 C. Director of meteorology A Muthuchami said premonsoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue over the next few days. Unlike Tuesday, when rainfall was scattered, most parts of the city are expected to receive rain.
The fluctuation in temperature and the afternoon showers are expected to continue till May-end. This rain, which is supposed to be a normal pre-monsoon phenomenon, had severe affects on Tuesday. Over 100 trees were uprooted, electric poles crashed and cars were damaged in several parts of the city.
Tuesday’s rain also plunged many areas into darkness. Even after 24 hours. power was not restored in Koramangala, Madiwala, BTM II Stage, Ejipura, Viveknagar, Bismillahnagar, parts of JP Nagar, Banashankari and Katriguppe.
Bescom officials said power supply was interrupted owing to heavy rain. They said the disruption was because 25-30 electricity poles fell down and many transmission wires were cut.
An official said: “We’ve received complaints from three to four areas — mostly Koramangala, Madiwala and Ejipura. We will restore power supply completely by Wednesday night.”
Power supply was restored in parts of JP Nagar, Jayanagar and BTM, but there were problems in Koramangala 4th and 5th blocks. With the Met department predicting low temperature for a couple of days owing to heavy cyclonic winds in the Bay of Bengal, sudden bursts of wind and rain can’t be ruled out.
Tree falls were reported in Jayanagar, Ashoka Pillar, JP Nagar, BTM Layout, near Indiranagar Club, Dr Rajkumar Road and Koramangala.
