Lalbagh green to get global hues

Lalbagh green to get global hues

By Subhash Chandra N S,DHNS,Bangalore:

It will be more greenery for Lalbagh Botanical Gardens as the horticulture department has embarked upon a special tree exchange programme, to add to the parks existing diversity on the lines of animal exchange plans undertaken by zoos of the country.

Though the City’s lung space is shrinking, the silver lining is that under this programme, the park will get over 3,000 trees from every nook and corner of the world.

“We already have about 7,500 trees of 1,854 species. Now another 850 species will arrive,” Dr M Jagadish, Deputy Director, Lalbagh Botanical Gardens told Deccan Herald.

He said the programme aims at making the garden serve as a ideal destination for botanical education.
“We are considered a botanical garden, we need to live up to the name and make the place more interesting, therefore we thought of this plan,” he said.

The garden already has tie-ups with other major botanical gardens like the ones in Ooty and Pondicherry, besides those in South-East Nations like Singapore and Malaysia.

He said the programme has already begun and the planting is on.

Nearly 60 per cent of the species being brought are exotic, while the remaining are indigenous. About 20 species of cassia and tropical evergreen species of Dillenia pentagyna are among the exotic varieties. Several attractive climbers and bushes will soon find their place in Lalbagh.

“Several flowering plants and trees and creepers yielding colourful flowers will be planted,” he said.
Several pine and temperate plant varieties will be added the park’s treasure. The department says the exchange programme will be a continuous process.
